Hi all.
I’ve been involved with Lord Howe Island for the last few years working on the Rodent eradication and more recently helping them with their ongoing Biosecurity program.
We’re in the final stages of a policy and regs update which will require all visiting vessels that exceed certain cargo carrying thresholds to have pre-departure detection dog checks for invasive rodents (along with having to meet many other requirements).
I’m trying to put a state by state contact list of professional detection dog handlers who have dogs trained on invasive rat and mouse (and ideally any reptile and amphibian scent too).
The Master or operator of each vessel will need to get in touch with suitable handlers, organise the inspections, and then provide a short summary report to the Lord Howe biosecurity team. The system will be user pays (i.e. handlers will be paid by vessel operators).
As the requirements for these checks do not extend to general recreational vessels, the volume of shipping that meets the requirements for dog checks will be very very low. I’m just keen to have a state-by-state contact list ready to go for when applications do come through.
We have a few contacts splattered here and there, but let me know if you or any of your contacts fit the bill.
Cheers.
S.
