The ACDN Competency Committee, comprised of dog handlers, trainers, researchers and environmental consultants, have developed a set of guidelines to assist conservation detection dog teams and their employers in evaluating dog team safety and search performance in a field setting. We recognise that this is a current gap in our industry and we hope that this helps teams better evaluate their performance progression across years and determine areas that require improvement.

As you will read in the document, this is not being proposed as a way for ACDN to endorse conservation detection dog teams, but rather a recommended set of guidelines

This is a ‘live’ document and is still currently in draft form. We have requested several organisations to peer-review this document and wish to extend this to our ACDN members for their input. Your comments will be reviewed by the ACDN Competency Committee and will be considered for the inclusion into these guidelines. As research and industry knowledge is always growing, this will remain a ‘live’ document and is aimed to be revised at least annually.

We acknowledge that no guidelines are perfect and that we will not receive 100% agreement. We hope, however, that these guidelines will be a way for us to further strengthen our industry and provide valuable data to all stakeholders.

Whilst this document is still in draft form we ask that you do not circulate it externally. If you have feedback on the guidelines please comment here or alternatively email myself (LTJamieson@zoo.org.au) and I will collate comments to bring to the ACDN Competency Committee.
