I have worked as a zoological consultant with Nature Advisory (formerly Brett Lane and Associates) since 2016 on a wide range of development projects. Part of my work includes the development and implementation of bird and bat management plans at wind farm across Australia.
In 2019 we moved to using a scent detection dog to undertake bird and bat mortality monitoring at wind farms, greatly improving efficiency and accuracy at all of our monitoring sites.
I have also introduced a new scent to Kitty: the EPBC Act listed Spiny Rice Flower which she can now successfully detect in the wild! I am currently working to get K9 scent detection as an approved targeted survey method for the species.
Kitty is a working line English Springer Spaniel trained by Steve Austin. Kitty is trained to find birds and bats as part of wind farm monitoring programs and also Spiny Rice Flower, a critically endangered flora species found in Victoria.
