Jesra García is an early career ecologist employed by Nature Advisory Pty. Ltd. as a Zoologist and Scent Detection Dog Handler and Trainer. She has been working in Nature Advisory’s zoology and dog handler teams, focusing primarily on wind farm BBAMP implementation, including conducting monthly bird and bat mortality searches, monitoring for raptors and Brolgas, and has completed fauna habitat assessments and targeted surveys for various listed species across south-east Australia. She has contributed to monthly monitoring efforts across several wind farms since October 2023, and prides herself on maintaining and encouraging a work ethic that promotes sound scientific practice and strong animal welfare (considering canines, wildlife, and stock animals alike – as well as human employees!), for the best possible ecological outcomes whilst providing an enriching outlet for working dogs.
Jes is particularly passionate about the conservation of less-charismatic fauna, flora, and fungi, and hopes to engage her dogs’ aptitude for scent detection work into targeted surveys for the monitoring of threatened or invasive species.
Jesra’s conservation detection dog career began when she and Barkimedes took part in the Conservation Dog Network’s August 2022 intensive workshop for beginner conservation detection dog teams, run jointly by Skylos Ecology (Australia), Rogue Detection Teams (U.S.A), Conservation K9 Consultancy (U.K.) at Mt Rothwell Biodiversity Interpretation Centre.
She has since received training from Steve Austin, has attended various lectures, webinars, and symposia (including the 2022 ACDN Conference, the 2024 ACDN Webinar Series with Zoos Victoria on their Wildlife Detection Dog Program, and the “Using detection dogs in ecological research and monitoring” symposium at the 2024 ESA Conference), and has trained and deployed multiple scent detection dogs and handlers.
Barkimedes
Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog x
3 years old
Barkimedes was adopted in May of 2022 after Jesra found him listed on PetRescue. Being born deaf hasn’t stopped this amazing boy from growing into a reliable scent detection dog, whose active mind, bond with his handler, constant check-ins, and responsiveness to their AUSLAN hand signs motivate him to work hard in the field. Barki is a steady searcher, who sniffs diligently and likes to analyse the scent of every find before lying down to indicate. He enjoys a variety of field rewards, including playing tug, savouring succulent pieces of grilled beef and hotdog, fetching the ball, wrestling with his handler, and getting butt-scritches. Outside of work, Barkimedes loves to travel in the car and watch the world go by through the back window, romp with other dogs, enjoy cuddles and massages, and watch movies with his human and canine family.

Cruise
Australian Koolie x Kelpie
1.5 years old
Cruise was adopted in May of 2024 after Jesra found him listed on Gumtree, located on the edge of one of the wind farms that he now surveys. Cruise is completely in his element whilst out searching with his handler. His phenomenal nose, stamina and speed, motivation to work, eagerness to please, and obsession with playing fetch (his work reward) make him an exceptional scent detection dog whose indications are flawless. He loves to learn new tricks and commands, including the AUSLAN signs his handler uses to communicate with him and his deaf brother Barkimedes. Outside of work, Cruise loves to splash in any body of water he can find, snap jets of water from a hose, and cuddle up on the couch to watch a movie with his human and canine family.
